i just recently received an email from WINR that we are set for streaming feed, starting tonight, so be sure to tune in to the radio show hosted by mark and me. we are live saturday night from 6pm to 8pm, and you guys can now listen in online. but how?

but what if you want to hear old shows? old shows are now stored on the private DJ server. since i cant give you access to them, im willing to let anyone who wants a copy have a copy. still, im not saying we are any good, but we try to be amusing. ill keep everyone up to date when we are going on the air, and hopefully you guys will tune in...

i am apparently now contracted to do flash advertisements for a website called xfire (www.xfire.com), for $15/hr. ill have my own graphic designer, and ill be provided with all the images i need. all i have to do is make them move. for $15/hr. who knew this stupid hobby would actually be valuable.

as the logical mind would surmise, wisdom increases as age increases. one could write a conditional statement to show this. but as it would seem, right-wing conservative christian fundamentalist nutjob jack thompson has defied the odds. this man, with the greatest of intentions, has taken on the gaming industry head-first. as a lawyer with the fine reputation as a wordsmith, he has managed to demonize the gaming industry by replacing such commonplace words as "video games" with the more conservatively-appropriate "murder simulators", words such as "gaming" or "playing" with words hinting at the true nature of gaming, such as "rehearsing" or "training".

ive never killed anyone...

now, this isnt to say that this man doesnt have a basis to his argument. he fights against the electronic software rating board (esrb) to less lenient with the ratings they hand out, such as his fight with rockstar games on the rating of san andreas after the media coverage of the "hot coffee" mod. this is a based argument because an m rating on a game that is clearly intended for adults isnt enough. rockstar games responded by changing the rating of the game to ao (adults only; the highest rating a game can receive).

what does it matter? if retailers such as walmart, circuit city, or best buy dont follow these guidelines, what power does the esrb really have? that, however, is not the subject of this rant, and i might save that for another day.

id say it truly begins during his campaign for florida attorney general back in 1988, against janet reno. at this time, he slandered reno with such allegations as her being a closet homosexual, being blackmailed by the mob, and having a drinking problem. he even handed her a piece of paper during a public debate with the following: "i, janet reno, am a 1) homosexual; 2) bisexual; 3) heterosexual. if you dont respond by such a date, then you will be deemed to have checked one of the first two boxes."

still, it doesnt stop there. this man has taken on such habits as attacking ad hominem (an argument taking the form of "person a states b; something exists that is objectionable about a, therefore b must be false"), name-calling, and threatening with lawsuits (and even physical violence) for those who respond negatively to his opinions. do not make yourself a straw man, mr thompson.

jack thomson has even been known to create his own "documented facts", for his personal disposal. one such fabricated piece of information is that "recent medical brain scan studies at harvard and indiana university prove... children's brain functions are damaged by a steady diet of violent images and messages." the indiana university study makes no mention of children's brain functions being damaged by exposure to violent media. it is mentioned that "there is a difference in the brain activation patterns of youths with disruptive behaviour disorder and those without when exposed to a specific stimulus", but it is not explicitly claimed that there is a correlation between exposure to violent media and brain activity. another such piece of information is that violent games are used by the military to desensitize and remove the inhibition to kill. this piece of information was fabricated by dave grossman, another christian fundamentalist censorship advocate.

one would think that the absurdity would stop there. but no. he has, on multiple occasions, contacted such gaming entities as scott ramsoomair (author of vgcats.com), the ceos of rockstar, and even verbally berated the author of penny arcade. he also loves incoming mail, such as this correspondence between thompson and a fourteen-year-old gamer. what a poor old man.

recently, an open letter of his surfaced, containing the following statements:

george bush simply said "parents just have to be better parents." he should trying telling that to my clients in paducah whose three daughters were gunned down by fourteen-year-old video gamer michael carneal, who trained on doom to become a more efficient killer. what did they, as parents, mr. president, do wrong? was sending their kids to school their mistake?

as much as it physically pains me to say this, bush was correct. the culprit here is the poor parenting and environment for these gamers. no amount of sheltering can clean society to the extent jack thompson wants. what he is calling for is book burning, the same mccarthyism of the '50s that almost turned america into nazi germany.

for those of you out of the loop for the past week, on october 10, jack thompson released yet another open letter entitled "a modest proposal", no doubt a genius allusion to the satirical work of johnathan swift in which the irish were recommended to eat their children (the way in which this relates to the gaming industry must be mind-blowing to mr thompson). the entirety of the letter is a bit disturbing, most notably his nonchalance in which he describes the very hateful acts which he protests, actually encouraging the physical attack on his opposition. one such quote:

target yourselves as you target others. i dare you.

if that isnt the signature of a man who has lost grip on reality, i dont know what is. thompson fights the gaming industry for demoralizing society, yet has no problem twisting the facts to tell his story. i even heard that he hates islam...

and for the purpose of concluding this entry, id like to point everyone in the direction of the reason why i felt led to write this article in the first place. in the open letter written oct 10, thompson offers to contribute ten-thousand dollars to charity if someone will design and market a game that follows the scenerio that he has mapped out. the scenerio goes a little something like:

you are father of victim. you hunt down the ceos of the major gaming industry figures and kill them in violent, disturbing ways, all the while, exacting a bit of contrapasso to avenge your sons death. end scenario with a violent massacre, just in time for the electronic entertainment expo.
